Annabelle Creation | 50 Days of Horror, Day 13

Night thirteen is a prequel that quietly outdoes the film it's a prequel to. Annabelle Creation is set in a rural home converted into an orphanage, and it earns its scares from geography you always understand — a bedroom no one's supposed to enter, a locked closet holding something that should have stayed put, a dumbwaiter, a barn that stops being safe once the sun goes down. Because you always know exactly where everything is in relation to everyone else, the moments that go wrong land harder than they would in a more chaotic space.

The real strength here is patience — shots that hold just long enough for your eyes to start filling in shapes in the dark, then move the second you've settled into that feeling. The threat plays with small sounds and small movements well before it commits to anything bigger, and despite being an origin story, it never leans on later chapters to do its work — it tells its own complete, mean little ghost story from the ground up.

It earns its spot for a run of genuinely memorable set pieces, blocking where every actor's position and every camera hold feels deliberate rather than accidental, and for being a prequel that actually expands what came after it instead of just filling in backstory nobody asked for. On disc, look for a transfer with real shadow detail — crushed blacks flatten out a lot of what makes this one work — and pay attention to the mix's quieter mid-volume moments as much as the jump-scare stingers; that's where a lot of the tension is actually built. Lights off, no phone, let it run like the haunted house tour it's clearly going for. If Annabelle Comes Home worked as a sampler for you, this is the fuller version of the same idea.
