Night nine swings back to straightforward old-school slasher territory. Hatchet sends a swamp tour group down the wrong stretch of water and into the path of a local legend who has zero interest in anyone's vacation plans. Everything here is built practically — the effects happen in camera, so the hits land with actual weight instead of the weightless look digital gore tends to have. The whole thing runs on one simple idea: introduce a group, work through them one by one, and have a genuinely good time doing it.

It's at its best leaning into the campfire-legend structure — the backstory, the warning nobody heeds, then the payoff, with kills inventive enough to stay fun instead of turning mean. The cast plays the danger straight enough that it registers, while leaving room for the humor to let a little pressure out along the way. Exactly the kind of thing you want as a mid-run adrenaline shot.

It earns its spot on practical effects alone if you grew up on that era — latex, pumps, and timing just read differently than anything built digitally. Barely any dead air, a good scare-to-laugh ratio throughout, and it scratches that classic legend-in-the-woods itch without dragging any real lore behind it. Watch this one a little louder than usual — the sound is doing real work selling both the swamp and the kills — and keep the room dark so the night shooting actually reads clean instead of murky. If you've got the unrated cut, use it; the gags land better untrimmed. On disc, look for a transfer with real blacks that don't crush the trees into a gray smear at night. Snacks, drinks, volume up — and unlike most nights in this countdown, this is one where talking through it with friends actually makes it better. Anyone else find practical gore ages better than the digital equivalent, decade for decade?
