Night six, and we go back before Saw became a decade of sequels — the original is just two strangers chained up in a filthy bathroom with a tape recorder and a set of rules built to force an ugly decision. Everything about the space sells it: the tile, the rusted pipes, the fluorescent hum. The whole movie keeps circling one question — what are you actually willing to do to walk out of that room.

This is a film that gets more out of a handful of props and two locked-in actors than budget would suggest it should — tight spaces, sharp editing, and a mystery that doles out clues carefully enough that the final reveal actually lands instead of feeling cheap. The traps are what people remember, but what actually pulls you through is the creeping realization that someone built this whole scenario days in advance and is sitting somewhere right now watching to see if the point gets across.

It earns its spot on a few fronts: you could practically stage this thing in one room with two chairs and lose nothing, it knows exactly when to hold still and when to snap forward, and as a series opener it's lean enough that you don't need any franchise homework going in — a solid mid-week jolt on its own. Kill the ambient light so the shadows actually read, push the volume up slightly for the tape hiss and chain sounds, and don't crank the brightness on a disc — you want the grime to look like grime instead of flattening into noise. No phone, couch, let the room do its thing. Worth knowing going in: this one isn't close to the goriest in the series, so it's a fair pick even if the later entries aren't your speed. Anyone else find the ending hits harder on a rewatch once you already know where the pieces land?
