Fifty days out from Halloween, and day one is Gremlins — the easy on-ramp before things get heavier. Small town, a pet that comes with rules, someone predictably breaks them, and Joe Dante lets practical puppets take it from there. It's playing as a comedy right up until it isn't, and that turn is exactly why this one opens the countdown instead of closing it — better to ease into the fifty nights than come in too hot and run out of steam by day three.

What actually sells it is how physical the puppets are — real things wrecking a real kitchen set, no CGI weightlessness to any of it. I don't own this one on VHS yet, which bothers me more than it probably should, so tonight's watch is on disc with the volume pushed up — the gremlin chatter and the little creaks before something breaks are carrying more of the scene than you'd expect.

Lights off, phone away, let the kitchen fight and the theater scene land the way they're supposed to. Anyone actually have this one on VHS? Tempted to go hunt a copy down before day two.
